It's native distribution is from Canada to southern California and Baja California; east to Texas, Nebraska, and Wisconsin; south into Coahuila and Nuevo Leon in northeastern Mexico. Native habitat is open plains, rocky slopes, cliffs, from low elevations into coniferous forests.
